Best Kept Village?

Bolted on the north of Haywards Heath, Lindfield provides a plethora of err "local history", naturally the residents are quite pleased with their village (well who's counting the council houses eh?).  And the village has gone through a number of changes.  Most of them road related as the main high street is constantly dug up, blocked by parked cars and mini roundabouts appear out of no where.

Well so what, at least they have Gerry Cottles Circus every year and the pubs are fairly good! Anyway I need contributors for Lindfield, if you're a village luddite, then get cracking!!

Best Kept Village Sign1.gif (27124 bytes) Attempts to thwart the chances of other villages in the area becoming Best Kept Village in the Sussex are chronicled here.  In a cruel twist some 5 years ago the village won the award far too many times.  The organisers suggested that Lindfield should sit the event out for two years (was this in order for other villages to import some history?).  Yet recently the organisation who gives this award away, have decided to call it quits for a while due to the fact that no one could be bothered to enter...  don't you just love apathy (nah don't really care!) wpe13.jpg (22470 bytes)
newanm.gif (11099 bytes)5/8/99 Robber told to get lost - Alan Stamford foiled an attempted armed robbery by telling the hooded raider to beat (not in the Michael Jackson sense!) - Kick Ass Lindfield style.
17/6/99 On the Verge - Mike who runs Martins in the high street had a moan about the grass verges that only got trimmed the other day 'cos of the annual village day.  Which was nice, he mentioned something about the Best Kept Village sign and all that palather....  in fact the story was rather dull and I had to abridge it !!
20/5/99 Baby Snatch Siege Ends in Tragedy - who would of thought it a second siege within the boundaries of the Heart of Mid Sussex in as much as 2 years.  Sad but true it would appear that people are still freakin' out.  DAMN YOU BLAIR!
18/2/99 Anger Over Plane Noise
An audio expert says early morning aircraft noise over his home in Lindfield is making his life a misery - well then I hope you have every success in putting your action group together NOT!
7/1/99 Here's what you Linddites have to look forward to in 1999
yes yet more traffic calming measures, so that all you twonks can breath a collective sigh (of relief?) that you can cross the road in piece, despite the fact that a solitary pelican crossing in the village would have sufficed.
The King Edward Hall is looking a bit run down, time to raise some funds eh?
3/1/99 - Lindfield Cricket Club
- Can something be done about the alarm going off at the Cricket club on Lindfield Common. Villagers get woken up every Sunday morning. Apparently the football club use the pavillion during the winter. Is it beyond the wit of man to tell these footballers how to operate the damn thing?
3/1/99 - Charles and Diana,
and the saga of Lindfield pond. Apparently the ducks often attack one another as well as the children.  Past stories covering the fowl (geddit) pair included them being shipped off to another pond or whatever.  The Parish Council stopped people from feeding the ducks bread (causes algae). now we’re supposed to use cabbage (cabbage!) or something.  This apparently upset the kiddie winkies.  But if you have a rebellious streak dump a few loaves of Mighty White and laugh maniacally as the algae grows at a very slow rate!
26/11/98 - Reely Interesting
- Memories of yesterday's Lindfield will be subject of a film evening presented by the Lindfield Preservation Society.   The three films are "Yesterday's Lindfiled", "Coronation Celebrations 1953" and "Jubilee Celebrations 1977".  All three films have recently been overhauled and technically enhanced by the BBC. - not quite George Lucas' Special Editions eh?
October 1998
- a spate of tree felling has been occurring in the the Lindfield area, mysteriously it happens at the crack of dawn!!
30/4/98 - E.E. Lacey of Savill Road,
Lindfield writes: I would suggest the Millennium could well be remembered in Mid Sussex if unsightly overhead power and telephone cables existing in many roads, particularly in the older areas of the town, were, replaced by underground services - Middy Postbag.
30/4/98 - rumour has it
that the plaque for "Lindfield Best Kept Village 1992" has been fashioned into a key ring and is currently in use in the Soho London area.

3/4/98 Lindfield, the winner of the best Kept village on three years in succession, aims to stay that way by ensuring discarded cigarette butts do not spoil its beautiful. And what better way then to educate potential smokers of the future about the dangers of the weed. Staff at the health centre on the High Street persuaded the village's traders to donate prizes towards a competition for the school children at Lind field Junior School to design a poster to highlight the harm nicotine Sister Alison Sallis from the health centre said: "the standard of the posters sent in was so high we had terrible trouble picking one out that was the best. And the knowledge of the children impressed us all, especially about how much damage smoking does to your lungs". She continued:" The whole of the village took part, as traders displayed posters in their windows and hopeful!!y raised everyone's awareness about National Non-Smoking day". The winning entry was submitted by Terri Jackson, 9, and the photograph shows her holding her poster surrounded by the 10 other winning finalists putting cigarettes where they belong - in the bin. (this bit was from middy, but serves how both, the Middy and Lindfield are struggling!)

Road Calming Unnecessaries
has gained a lovely new roundabout adjacent to the village pond on that bend which backwoods lane joins west common road.   Thus joining the hallowed ranks of unnecessary constructions.  Well done West Sussex County Council.
